COLD MILLED FLAX

Flax is incredibly effective at removing sand from the digestive tract while delivering an abundance of nutrients to your horse. When exposed to moisture, flax can swell up to 20 times in volume and take on a jelly-like consistency. The jelly-like substance is known as mucilage and it is the mucilage that traps and suspends the sand, carrying it to the top of the cecum and out of the body!

What about psyllium?

 

Recent research has proven that psyllium does very little for the removal of sand (especially in the amounts suggested by psyllium suppliers) and does not have any nutritional value. Usually psyllium pellets and flakes consist of inactive ingredients such as mineral oil, "natural" and artificial flavors, propionic acid and molasses which are counter productive for your horses' health. On top of that “husk dust” inhalation is a risk with psyllium husk.
